The Mailbox 141 alternative gallery sight has garnered quite the reputation for really beautifully conceived site-specific work. The very nature of the space, 19 glass front mailboxes, makes for an interesting challenge for artists and curators alike.

We are always really excited by the work of Jennifer Bartholomew and she has installed a beautiful show in this  amazing space. With her own particular take on the Dear John letter her series of  delicate glove watercolours that seem to have mouths for passing on strange and sad break up messages.

You can view the work at 141 Flinders Lane between 7am -6pm Mon Fri and 12-6 Sat.

Show runs til Nov 12 which is not as far away as you think. RAMONA

It's no secret that the ladies of HML love the work of artist Emma Van Leest (we've talked about her here, here and here!) and so we are thrilled that today she is participating in a week long art event taking place up the road on Nicholson Street East Brunswick.

Take the 96 and stay on until the very end. Every day over the next week an artist will be in residence and you can go check out what they are doing before popping into Milkwood for coffee -seriously the best coffee we've had in ages.

There is a terrific website about the show at IMMATERIAL INDUSTRY  that'll get you up to speed as you hurtle along in the bumblebee tram. RAMONA

SHOW OF (Last) WEEK

As promised a bit of reporting from the fringe front line with the final day of Home is Where the Craft is last Sunday. With a title like that we had to check it out. What we didn't realise is that was actually being staged in someone's house! It was quite exciting going through the back fence to see the wee craft market.

Oh how I wished I could have bought one of these fab frocks. So beautifully made. They are available at Olive Grove print studio in Sydney Road and designer Anna Boyd-Dunlop promised me an online store by xmas!

More treasure to be found inside the open house with some mixtape mags available in the kitchen,

some super cute gouache and stitch numbers by Emily Chan in the living room

The intern fell in love with a horse series by Cate Lawrence - refashioned embroideries in a whimsical equine series.

So it may not have been Finders Keepers (more on that epicness later in the week) and it may be the sunshine had gone to our heads a little  but there was something very charming and generous about this show. We hope they repeat this open house next year. RAMONA

last minute craft alert

Today is your last chance to catch the Fringe show 'Home is Where the Craft Is'. They are also holding a craft market there today so it's a good chance to see how artist Cate Lawrence and her crew have interpreted the theme in a fine art context as well as making stuff for the trestle table.

I'll be there and I'll take some pics for those of you that can't make it xx RAMONA

CRAFTIST OF THE WEEK

this seems to be a week of me coming clean and revealing my inner craft geek fanisms. So best to be up front and out myself as a massive Sarah Applebaum fan. Gasp! and Gadzooks!!! She's almost too awesome to contemplate and near impossible to talk up enough: soft sculpture genius, psychedelic snow gorilla wrangler, and extreme afghaner...

 So... rather than be blathering like a teenager with a crush I'll send you over to Sarah's website and the lovely Meighan O'Toole of My Love for you is a Stampede of Horses (ok so I also have a massive craft geek crush on her as well but that's another story) for a sneak peak inside Sarah's studio and a slightly less hysterical narrative. ENJOY!
